(de)construction of a grid

2024

When I see certain shapes and patterns I think about what the starting point for it might have been. As a designer I naturally wonder what inspired a certain shape, pattern or what formula lies behind a grid. Is it a multiplication of a simpler element? Is it the influence of a certain technique? Or maybe the materials themselves influenced the outcome?

Analyzing my own design process I discovered that I always edit a certain starting point, and the outcome is then edited again, until it gets a certain functionality. This alteration can be a multiplication of a graphic element, multiplication of a physical element, using the starting point as a tool, developing next generation tools, applying it onto another material, etc.

In this project I am exploring this design methodology by designing a ‘mother shape’ and exploring it’s alterations through prints and sculptural objects. Each technique and each medium influences the outcome and gives it the specific characteristics. Details of the making process become accentuated when repeated over and over again, this is what gives the character to a design ultimately: the slight imperfections which become visible only when a certain action is multiplied.
